Che grande gruppo! Avevamo conosciuto i Mass Media una decina di anni fa allor che pubblicammo sulla Stratosfera il loro primo album, "Opacità scura" (cliccate qui) pubblicato solo nel 2005 ma contenente un concerto dal vivo registrato a Torino l'11 luglio 1978. Nel 2007 ecco uscire per la Electromantic Music il primo e unico (e ultimo) album del gruppo. Grazie, caro amico Frank-One per avermi inviato tempestivamente questo magnifico lavoro (file e copertine). Guidati da un grande chitarrista come Armando Pozzo, il quintetto torinese registrò questo album negli studi Electromantic Synergy a Chivasso con la produzione dell'ex Arti e Mestieri, Beppe Crovella. Buona parte delle 13 tracce di cui si compone questo album (alcune solo strumentali) vennero già presentate in versione live su "Opacità scura".
Lo stile è sempre quello, un jazz rock di alto profilo con venature rock, funky e progressive. Troviamo riferimenti piuttosto evidenti agli Arti e Mestieri, ai Brand X, alla Mahavishnu Orchestra (ascoltate "Il sentiero del mago") ma anche ai grandi mostri sacri del prog nazionale (PFM) e internazionale (E.L.P.) Il disco si chiude con una lunga traccia registrata in studio in presa diretta, intitolata "Suite del ringraziamento", un medley che omaggia grandi compositori, da Bach a Mozart, da Brubeck a Bernstein. Inutile sottolineare la preparazione tecnica dei cinque musicisti (Piero Dondi è travolgente con le sue tastiere). Peccato che l'avventura dei Mass Media si sia conclusa così precocemente. Gustatevi quindi "Criproidea" dalla prima all'ultima nota e andate a riscoprire il live del 1978. Ne vale la pena. "The CD Criptoidea contains 13 songs, four have (Italian) vocals, the rest is instrumental. The music often delivers swinging and fluent jazzrock (echoes from Mahavishnu Orchestra and Brand X) with lots of guitar and Fender Rhodes electric piano (along Hammond organ and synthesizers) and a very adventurous, often propulsive rhythm-section. I am impressed by the musicians their skills and interplay, it’s obvious they are very experienced and know each other very well in musical terms. I am delighted about the parts in which the guitar is supported by strings/ a propulsive rhythm-section and the duels between guitar and keyboards, what an energy. The final composition Suite Del Ringraziamento is a tribute to some classical composers and keyboardists Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson. It is recorded live in the studio and contains short renditions of compositions by Bach (Badinerie and Preludio), Mozart (Rondo A La Turca), Bernstein (America), Brubeck (Blue Rondo A La Turk), Copland (Hoedown) and Wakeman (Catherine Howard). We can enjoy sparkling piano and fiery guitar and great interplay between guitar and keyboards, remarkably is the fiery electric guitar in Hoedown instead of the fat synthesizer sound. This CD wil please many jazzrock fans, what a stunning band and what an exciting CD!" Buon ascolto.
